Dear government, at somepoint sinss the 18th centory, we've become completely incapable of taking care of owwselves.

There's actually a good reason for that. Chick it out (http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blfarm4.htm) ...

    1850
    Total population: 23,191,786
    Farm population: 11,680,000 (estimated)
Farmers made up 64% of labor force
    Number of farms: 1,449,000
    Average acres: 203

1860 Farmers made up 53% of labor force
1870 Farmers made up 49% of labor force
1880 Farmers made up 49% of labor force
1890 Farmers made up 43% of labor force
1890 Farmers made up 43% of labor force
1900 Farmers made up 38% of labor force
1910 Farmers made up 31% of labor force
1920 Farmers made up 27% of labor force
1930 Farmers made up 21% of labor force
1940 Farmers made up 18% of labor force
1950 Farmers made up 12% of labor force
1960 Farmers made up 8.3% of labor force
1970 Farmers made up 4.6% of labor force
1980 Farmers made up 3.4% of labor force
1990 Farmers made up 2.6% of labor force

That trend might explain a few things.

Why did they say "went bad"? As robberies go killing the robber is about as good as it gets.

It was either the guard or the robber, and if the robber wins, other innocent people may get shot too. You may not understand it, unless it happened to someone close to you.

If the robber had a gun, he planned to use it if necessary. He was not going to have any consideration for whoever he shoots, as long as he could get away with his crime.

If you compare their investment in R&D to what they manage to churn out, it's pretty sad.

Microsoft doesn't really play in the consumer / gadget / toy market, which simply means that you don't get to see most of their products unless you work in a corporate data center. And unlike Apple, Microsoft -has- data center / server products that people WANT to use and that are years ahead of the pack (Sharepoint Portal Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server, Terminal Services, just to name a few) - and a LOT of their RD goes there.

Also, nobody here should kid themselves - Microsoft still OWNS the desktop and office suite markets. Around a BILLION computers run their software, and even most Macs are dead in the water without Microsoft Office and/or Microsoft Windows (in Boot Camp, Parallels, Fusion, VirtualBox).

So Apple was more profitable in the last quarter. Big deal. Somebody with enough time on their hands might want to analyze the spending behavior and amount of staff and level of salaries to find out -WHY- that was the case. Maybe the guys at Microsoft have higher salaries and more vacation. Maybe Ballmer put more money into RD and marketing than in the last quarter. Maybe they bought more startups than before.

Actually, who cares. Both companies are extremely profitable, but Microsoft has been profitable for a couple of decades more than Apple (who almost died in the 1990s while Microsoft was making more money than anybody else).

    I'm getting a 17" 2 ghz C2D iMac (that's a mouthful) soon.

Sounds exciting with all that speed! I don't know what to do with it! I guess my iTunes visualizations will be smoother, and I'll have the Dashboard ripple effect.

I also work in iMovie sometimes so the speed gain will be nice.

I am moving up from an eMac 1 gigahertz G4. So I'm sure it will seem very fast to me. Probably more than I need.

Im with you on the glossy iMacs, there AWFUL to actually sit in front of and use for any lenght of time, talk about eye strain.

MATT option iMac and im there in a flash, but im not holding out hope, the 1600 ive sat waiting for a new desktop is more and more likely going towards a home built i7 sandybridge rig, and windows 7 so that when i sit with my back to the window the screen doesnt just refelect the outside world and i have to squint through it rather than just see what im working on. I dont need a tree or a bus in my spreadsheets or word documents thank you apple.

I Love my Macbook pro, with its MATT screen, i cant justify a MacPro expense, and the Mac Mini just doesnt cut it at the graphics card level, so that leaves the iMac, love the form factor, love the OS, hate the unusable migrane inducing shiney screen.

    However,

the iPad i prefer the glossy screen, same with the iPhone, but then the occasions ill be using an iPad require me to have a bright colour screen for PDFs, and the lighting is usually bad enough that the reflective qualities are not a problem.

Well it looks like my iMac will meet the minimum specs for Lion, so I might upgrade, but then that's it for me. I'll probably go to Linux or some alternative operating system. - Maybe I'll crack out my NeXT Dimension Cube :D

Ah, classic manipulation of an idea. At no point in that post did I say "helping people" is a bad thing, or that it should never be done. Quite the contrary... I actually said:

So please, don't cherrypick. Education is the only answer to this problem, nobody disputes that. But to say there is absolutely no correlation between the death and suffering going on in Africa, and a large portion of that society which is beyond help and beyond the limitations of education would be naive.

There are times in human history when, despite all our better efforts, nature is going to run its course, and those groups who have not adapted their lifestlye and way of thinking are left behind. I'm certainly not saying don't try, nor am I saying that saving even a single life wouldn't be worth the effort. I'm merely saying that Africa's problems are deeper than education. There's a culture there that has been in place a lot longer than even our own system of education and medicine has existed. To think that we can change that by giving them some condoms, explaining how they work and why it's important, is foolish. I'm saying that Africa will sort out it's own problems in time, when those individuals who recognize the problem for themselves get a voice. We can help, and every little bit helps, but it's not ours to fix. This is FAR FAR more complex and rooted than a kid who hurts his knee on a skateboard.

    AMEN brotha!

Darn! That article indeed wowed me. Not only what it says, but also (and that is a Good Thing) the way it says it. The writing style really sucks you in the article. Of course, the products it 'promises' do help to raise the interest meter.

But, all in all, really good article. :)

    Hi
Been wanting this for a while. I have a windows PC just doing nothing, if I can turn it into an Airport Express like device, can have music going throughout the house.
You already can, it's called Home Sharing (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3819), which is also available on your iDevice using iOS 4.3 and later.

There are a number of AirPlay apps in the App Store that allow an iDevice to be recognized as an Apple TV, as mentioned, AirView (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/airview/id412370918?mt=8) is one of those particular apps -- and it even offers streaming from one iDevice to another, as one of the other devices is a virtual Apple TV.

Why is it that much more difficult to create an app that receives audio only AirPlay? I don't know -- but I'm not a veteran iOS app developer.

I think, with iOS now capable of being in the Home Sharing loop the demand for audio only streaming to iDevices using AirPlay -- instead of some third-party solution -- is extremely low.

According to MacWorld, they originally reported the date as the 24th, but have corrected their article and it is the 25th.

Not a huge deal, just clarifies that there will not be an Apple Special event then a seperate event at Photokina.

But I fear what Apple has in mind is basically an entire range of Macbook Air laptops. The Air is a fine computer, no doubt, but it's not the portable desktop I want and never can be without supporting two drives and discrete graphics in one way or another. That is exactly what I envision for the next Mac Book Pro. Take a MacBook Air make it just thick enough to handle an additional 2.5" Hard Drive, dedicated graphics, and a high performance processor. Ditch the optical drive, make SSD+HD the standard configuration.

Miles you make a great point... You also confirm that Apple better pull them, its a pointless app because if your so drunk then you can't operate a phone let alone an app.

Whatever. Just because you're over the legal limit doesn't mean you're so completely smashed that you can't operate a touch screen device. Using an iphone is much, much easier than driving a car while intoxicated.

That said, I don't want to make this about whether or not drunk driving is OK. We all know it's wrong. At least I hope we all know it.

The way I see it, a group of politicians get together to conceive some non-issue, complain about something that is completely legal, in order to score points with their constituents and look like they're being tough on drunk driving. I guarantee you that these guys have driven home drunk just as much as the average person. Maybe I'm being cynical, but come on! Don't we have enough on our plate already with all the actual work we need to get done. Enough with the goddamned showmanship already!

Ask apple to take the apps down, who are you kidding?

I doubt Apple will introduce new hardware at this photography show. OK maybe a C2D MBP but that is a minor upgrade, basically just a speed bump. You don't send out invetations to a "special event" and then anounce a "speed bump"

I think it will be software. First will be Aperture 2.0 that addresses same of the issues. Remember months ago when Apple disbanded the Aperture software team? What we will see on the 24th is the work done so far by the new development team. I expect to see some new ideas, better performance and better RAW processing.

But a special event just for one version release? They will have to have something else. A "One more thing..." item. My gues is a new software package. A l photo editor. I doubt Apple will try and compete with Adobe's CS2 or CS3 but they could take on Adobe's "Elements". or more narowly, PSE's editing abilty. There is room for a pixel editor that has a better user interfacethan Adobe. Apple could have looked at Nikon's "Cature NX" and how it uses "control point" and does not destructive editing.

Apple could also do something to make color managment simpler and easier. Wouldn't it be realy nice if the ACD had a built-in color measurement ability. Self monitoring. Or maybe an abient light color measurement so it would "know" if the room was lit with window light or flourecent. This kind of thinng would give people a reason to by ACD rather then Dell or whatever is cheaper. It wuld be revolutionary and worth of a "special event"

OK, Now Apple HAVE to release our precious Mini Mac Pro and put one of these in it!

Yep, Apple need a smaller Mac Pro with one processor very soon. I think maybe at Macworld, if not sooner?

Merom is going to stay at about this speed for many years. There are no quad core mobile processors on the Intel Roadmap.
So when we have 2 core Merom iMacs, which will no doubt last us until Santa Rosa half way through next year, and 8 core Mac Pros with dual Clovertowns, do people not see the slight gap???
Perfect for a Mini Mac Pro. Or a beefier iMac. But I would prefer the Mini Mac Pro. Then at least the lineup would be 2-4-8 core, instead of pretty much a quadrupling of power in well threaded applications between highest consumer and lowest pro. Now that's just insane.

So... Merom MBP's on Tuesday or Wednesday. Merom Macbooks in a month. Clovertown Mac Pros and Xserves, PLUS Kentsfield Mini Mac Pro (conroe on all but highest model) all at Macworld 2007. Not too much of a stretch at all, in my opinion, especially when all we are likely to see on the Mac Pros and Xserves is new CPUs dropped in.

It seems I got my iMac Ultra (in some form) so I'm starting lobbying now on Mini Mac Pro. One Conroe CPU socket, 4 RAM slots, 2 PCI Extreme slots, 2 HDD bays. 600W PSU, and enough cooling to allow us to continue to upgrade parts as long as the socket stays the same, which should be a few years yet.

That statement is pure speculation and I have not seen that anywhere *official*. Until it actually happens, it hasn't happened.
It came directly from VZW executives.

Here is an article from Business Week.

    http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-03-01/verizon-wireless-will-end-unlimited-data-plans-for-iphone.html

    First two paragraphs.

It will be there for a while. However, everyone knows what Verizon does best and that is being the most expensive and greedy. They will not allow the unlimited data to continue when no other carrier readily makes it available.

I'm all for protecting the environment, but sometimes it gets out of hand. Greenpeace should be there, but it is evident that Apple is already working on being more environmentally friendly. Greenpeace should have been kicked out for violating their contract.

    +1 for Apple
