I'd gladly wait overnight for a solid 1080p movie that played in quicktime. Don't need the DVD features (or frickin' ads). Just give me the movie.

I'm a pretty serious Apple fanatic and I'm willing to scrap my family's iPhones because of this. I know the government can track me anyway by watching my movement across cell towers, but this is a huge affront to privacy.

If you tie this story to the recent news from Michigan that cops there are able to suck the data off of your phone at a traffic stop, then this is really frightening.

    A redesign in 2012?

That seems to align with all the big changes expected for the iPhone, iPad and MacBook pro.

See above I am testing this theory now and will report on the result in about a half hour.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the results. I just ripped a chapter to AVC using 768kps and 640x352 and playing it took my powerbook to 60%. We ARE talking about a powerful codec here.

But then again, 320x240 H.264 made my iBook G3 900 go chunky...

I'm amazed that no-one is seeing the very dangerous path we could be heading down here. Will people only see it when it's too late?

Are we looking into the jaws of the future where you pay, but never OWN anything? Music, Movies, Apps.

You pay to have the right to listen/watch/use the data.

The data is never downloaded to your device to do as you wish, it's always held by the owners. or distributors.

I can see this coming like a flashing red warning sign.

You're being alarmist. Besides what does it matter to you if you "own" a copy of a song, just as long as the overall cost of use is the same or less? Competition will always moderate costs. I suggest you get more sleep and relax.

What about the patent designs that were just shown of the Cube 2?
    http://www.unwiredview.com/2006/09/07/apple-cube-ii-computer/

It's the same patent as the original cube.

Google is buying up Dark Fiber. That means no end points into homes like Verizons FIOS has. The bottleneck for full length high resolution movies will be from decentralized distribution centers to the homes. Dark Fiber is helping, but not by much.

Apple bought Worldcom's new telecom switch center.

Google is buying Nortel's dark fiber.

Google's CEO is on Apple's board.

Nobody is going to run fiber to the last mile.

The solution is Intel wimax and Samsung 4G.

    I told you so.

Good job Apple. Finally Apple can buy out Creative in a few years. At least if Creative is going to make iPod accessories that will be a good start for them to profit very handsomely.

What phone you have? The newer quad band phones get great service in and out of urban areas using Cingular.

I had a Motorola v551 (also a piece of shite, matched the Cingular service quite well). That thing broke (one of the 2 things a Motorola phone is capable of doing, the other one is looking pretty. Because they certainly don't work) and I got a Sony w810i unlocked from eBay. It's a quadband, and the Cingular service still sucks. My parents have LG phones on Cingular, their service sucks. My sister has T-Mobile and couldn't be happier. We're headed over there when the contract's up

    Then I pose the following:

    a) Why are you still buying them?
    b) Why are you still here?

The real question is why MS is so bothered about Apple using 'App Store'. Historically MS (almost) never used the word App, instead using the word Programs. Surely MS can come up with many alternatives that describe their own store equally well, if not better. Why fight with Apple over this? I can only conclude that it is to spite Apple, or to ride Apple's coat tails yet again.
Even if MS is right, logically, linguistically, I find their attitude over this rather puerile. PR-wise it says to me "Apple, if we can't imitate you, we'll sue you"
MS sinks lower in my opinion by the day.

Completely agree with you. Not sure why Microsoft making this a BIG deal.

Hilarious to all those people who jumped on the THUNDERBOLT bandwagon. No thunderbolt devices yet and they have the hideous old case design.

But they have an i7, 13 inch machine.

Either the video playback code was improved to be less power hungry (maybe it uses less CPU, maybe it doesn't need to spin the disk as much), or an improved video chip was put in which uses less power.
    Thanks for that explanation.

iPhone.org is a hoax, i think. I'm not sure, but it is kinda funny that Apple owns mammals.org? why in the heck does apple own that domain name? Kinda lookin forward to seeing the the all new Apple Mammal, It's a robot that looks and feels human, can think and even reproduces the same way a human does. LOL Oh and it can play the new movies too.

you seem, like so many people these days, to be wanting everything while giving nothing...

Hey Apple / music / movie /etc etc industry, why cant you just let me have whatever I want, whenever I want, all for free?
And let me moan and whinge non-stop while you're doing it.

    QFT.

And not just free - employ people and sink resources into it to make it happen, so that Apple (and other companies making great products) actually pays for these things they want, like they're 5 year olds pawing through the candy in the check-out line at Walgreens, demanding one more piece. You want the candy? Buy it.

On another tack, I can't help thinking this guy has opened up a can of worms for himself, DMCA-wise.

What I find extremely interesting is the LACK of rumors on the MacBook - it's the oldest Mac in the lineup and is extremely overdue for an upgrade (almost double it's normal product cycle).

Why does Apple think it's okay to continually alienate and turn away developers?? Why do fanboys continue to excuse such incidences? Why aren't people SICK of this kind of behavior from Apple?

A little-known company, and that was to create it's product. If apple buys one of their largest competitors, that will raise a few eyebrows.

Largest in a sense but Creative is hardly a competitor. The largest out of 25% is substantial in everyday terms but I think it's safe to assume the MS Zune would have destroyed their market share. And I wouldn't have cared if this lawsuit had flattened creative (as it was due to do before they won the patent filings).

Creative make feature-filled products but they lack a) finesse and b)the iTunes music store.

If Creative hadn't won the patent fight they would have already filed for bankruptcy by now.

There is a video demonstrating Thunderbolt tech transfer speed. Soft meter gives around 700mb/s but it copies 4,42gb in 14 so its like 350mb/s. Best SSD hd transfer are around 250mb/s, its a nice improvement...

I think the debate here is people who prefer local storage vs those who want cloud based storage. Those who want cloud based storage are saying that this will nor replace local storage but just be an OPTION, so why all the fuss?

Well, the DANGER is that with the initiation of cloud based storage, Apple will no longer feel the NEED to increase local storage and might even reduce it. Heck, we've been sitting on 32 GB iPhone and 64 GB touch for almost 3 years now (and 64 GB iPad for 2 years) with no real hope that this will increase next generation. Remember that it's been over 5 years ago when 160GB was the norm on iPod Classics and local storage was increasing every single cycle and people were dying to have it. Who would have thought at that time that it would top out there and suddenly decline dramatically in newer devices. It's scary really.

We again need increases in on-device capacity! My library is never going to get smaller, for christ sake, only larger. Cloud based storage gives us the danger of again stagnant or decreases in local storage as an Apple PHILOSOPHY, which would totally suck.

    Tony
